The Harlem Flop House is a charming 1890's Victorian brownstone on a safe, quiet, street in Manhattan. Located at Harlem's cultural center, it is steps away from the world famous Apollo Theater, numerous Jazz clubs and Gospel choirs, a minute from the A, B, C, and D subway trains. There are no private bathrooms as The Harlem Flophouse was originally built as a single family home in the 1890s. Additionally, it is not air conditioned in the summer, however, each room comes with a giant fan and I’m told that there is a comforting breeze. Each room has one full-sized bed. A single sized futon with linen can be provided for no extra charge upon request. Innkeepers speak some French, English, German, and Spanish.

Tribeca Blu Hotel

This hotel is new to the scene offering amazing rates starting at just $165 per night. For those wishing to stay in this area convenient to Chinatown, the Village, Statue of Liberty boats, 9/11 museums etc, this is a great choice. Although there is no on-premises restaurant, the price makes up for it. The hotel is housed in a beautiful cast-iron nine-story building representative of the style of this historic district of Manhattan. It is equipped with all of today's technology and comforts.

The Jane Hotel

If you are on the adventurous side, try The Jane hotel in the West Village. The hotel is conveniently located near the A, C, and E subways at 14th Street and the 14th Street bus. Originally built as a hotel for sailors with cabin-like rooms, the land marked hotel was lovingly restored on its centennial in 2008. You’ll find you’ll find small bunker rooms which you can rent for a mere $75. They're not much larger than a cabana in the hull of a ship, and you do have to share a communal bathroom, but it's definitely a unique experience. Captain's Cabins, the upgraded rooms, feature 300 thread count cotton sheets, flat-screen TV, DVD player, iPod dock, free WiFi, telephone with voice mail, and in-room safe. The private bathrooms feature rainfall shower heads, marble sinks, and C.O. Bigelow amenities. All rooms have river views and/or terraces. Once you stay here, you'll understand why it's one of the great cheap hotels in New York City.

The Sohotel is another overlooked gem. Definitely fitting into my category of cheap hotels in New York City, but alive with amenities and perks. All rooms are outfitted with state-of-the-art luxury 13 inch Therapedic mattresses with 3" pillow tops and decorated in a whimsical way.

The only private organization in the New York area to provide accommodations at subsidized rates and club-type facilities for servicemen and servicewomen, military retiree and veterans and their families visiting New York City. The NYFD, NYPD, and EMS workers are included as well. It provides convenient, safe, very affordable accommodations in mid-town Manhattan, walking distance from public transportation and great landmarks! Each chic room features a big wall stencil celebrating the big apple and many have stunning views of Manhattan. There is a rooftop bar with a 360-degree view of Manhattan, Queens, and the East River.

New York City hotel deals can be found on college campuses too. Several universities in New York City rent vacant dorms to visitors. Here are some thoughts on other kinds of New York City hotel deals:
1) Columbia University: 517 West 121 Street, 212-678-3235. Hotel-style rooms are provided year round by calling the telephone number provided. Rates are $140 for 1-2 night stays, $130 for 3-6 nights, and $115 for more than 7 nights!.
