What is the Intrepid Museum?

The Intrepid Museum is an sea, air, and space museum that is housed in a World War II and Vietnam aircraft carrier. It has a 900 ft flight deck which showcases old and new warplanes, the Air France Concorde, and the Space Shuttle Enterprise. It’s an absolutely astounding sight!

What Will You See?

The Shuttle Enterprise, the prototype NASA orbiter that paved the way for the space shuttle program! How about the only publicly-displayed submarine with guided missiles, the Growler! The secret A-12 Blackbird spy plane! 30 aircraft including 2 of the fastest in the world! The supersonic Concorde plane! A tribute to the 9-11 victims. Well, you'll just have to go and discover the rest of the surprises it has in store for you. Believe me, you won't be disappointed.

The Shuttle Enterprise

The Shuttle Enterprise has chosen the Intrepid to be its semi permanent home! The Enterprise is housed in a pressurized, temperature-controlled bubble! It will stay there for 3-4 years and will then be moved to an undisclosed location. It weights 150,000 pounds and has flown all of its missions in 1977 within the Earth's orbit. Click here to learn more about the Shuttle Enterprise.

Where is the Intrepid Museum?

It is located at Pier 86, which is on 46th Street at 12th Avenue.

I Recommend

1-The three flight-zone simulators! Buy tickets for all 3, if you dare, and receive a discount!

2-Arrive early. The crowds can get large, especially in the summer. Visit the submarine first. They only allow a certain number of people in at a time, so sometimes there is a line. We arrived first thing in the morning and didn't have to wait at all.

3-Rent the audio-tour. You'll learn alot more while you hear the pilots' and crew members' stories in their own words. The audio-tours are available in multiple languages or you can take a guided tour wth a tourguide.

4-Check the Public Events Calendar to see if there is something special planned for your visit date. Or, plan your visit to coincide with a special event.

5-A visit to see The Shuttle Enterprise, of course.
