Although New York City buses sometimes travel slower than subways due
to traffic, they are often more convenient. Why? Because buses stop every two blocks, so you will be left very close to your destination.
Buses are often the more convenient choice for those traveling crosstown (East and West) or short distances uptown or downtown (North and South).
Don't forget about types of NYC transportation, including subway, driving and parking in NYC, and more!
Drivers of New York City buses do not handle money. So, you must have a Metrocard or coins (no pennies) with you. These function like gift cards giving you the ability to add money when low or at any time. Don't throw away your card when empty or you will be charged $1 for a new one. MetroCards can be purchased at all subway stations and at more than 3000 other locations such as hotels, newstands, restaurants and the like.

WHEN YOU BOARD THE BUS
As you board the bus, hold the MetroCard with the black stripe on the right and the MetroCard name facing you. The farebox is directly in front of you as you board. Dip the MetroCard into the farebox. Your fare will be deducted automatically, and the MetroCard will pop back out.
