WHEN TO USE NEW YORK CITY BUSES
Although New York City buses sometimes travel slower than
subways due to traffic, they are often more convenient. Why? Because buses stop every two blocks, so you will be left very close to your destination.
Buses are often the more convenient choice for those traveling crosstown (East and West) or short distances uptown or downtown (North and South).
HOW TO PAY FOR YOUR BUS RIDESDrivers do not handle money. So, you must have a Metrocard or coins (no pennies). MetroCards can be purchased at all subway stations and at more than 3000 other locations such as hotels, newstands, restaurants and the like. Click here for a list of MetroCard merchants new you! You can also purchase New York City MetroCards from subway station vending machines with cash, credit card, or debit card.
Bargain Payment and Discount Options: - $2.50 for a single ride to any stop, no matter what the distance. However, use your MetroCard filled with more money and the ride will cost just $2.25. In addition, you can use your Metrocard to transfer to another bus or the subway within 2 hours of your initial trip...free.
- Put $10 or more on your card and receive a 7% bonus. So, if you put $20 on your card, you actually receive $21.40 on your card, a nice bonus.
- 7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard: $29 unlimited subway and bus rides for 7 days.
- 30-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard: $104 for unlimited subway and bus rides for 30 days.
WHERE DO BUSES STOP FOR PICK-UPS?
All buses that travel within Manhattan, reflect the letter M on their bus banner, followed by a letter which desingnates their route.
Stops are indentified by a blue sign post noting the bus number, or a shelter reflecting a map and a schedule( ignore the schedule, trust me).
Push one of the orange strips on the inside of the bus to signal that you'd like the bus to stop.
