New York City Buses:
Cheap and They Stop
Within One Block Of Your Destination

WHEN TO USE THE BUS

Although New York City buses sometimes travel slower than subways due

to traffic, they are often more convenient. Why? Because buses stop every two blocks, so you will be left very close to your destination.

Buses are often the more convenient choice for those traveling crosstown (East and West) or short distances uptown or downtown (North and South).

Don't forget about types of NYC transportation, including subway, driving and parking in NYC, and more!

HOW TO PAY FOR YOUR BUS RIDE

Drivers of New York City buses do not handle money. So, you must have a Metrocard or coins (no pennies) with you. These function like gift cards giving you the ability to add money when low or at any time. Don't throw away your card when empty or you will be charged $1 for a new one. MetroCards can be purchased at all subway stations and at more than 3000 other locations such as hotels, newstands, restaurants and the like.

Log on to tripplanner.mta.info/metrocardmerchants to locate a Metrocard retailer nearest you!

WHEN YOU BOARD THE BUS

As you board the bus, hold the MetroCard with the black stripe on the right and the MetroCard name facing you. The farebox is directly in front of you as you board. Dip the MetroCard into the farebox. Your fare will be deducted automatically, and the MetroCard will pop back out.

Bargain Payment and Discount Options:

  • $2.75 for a single ride to any stop, no matter what the distance. However, use your MetroCard filled with more money and the ride can cost you less. In addition, you can use your Metrocard to transfer to another bus or the subway within 2 hours of your initial trip...free.

  • Put $5.50 or more on your card and receive a 11% bonus.

  • 7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard: $31 unlimited subway and bus rides for 7 days.

  • 30-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard: $116.50 for unlimited subway and bus rides for 30 days.

WHERE DO BUSES STOP FOR PICK-UPS?

All buses that travel within Manhattan, reflect the letter M on their bus banner, followed by a letter which desingnates their route.

Stops are indentified by a blue sign post noting the bus number, or a shelter reflecting a map and a schedule (ignore the schedule, trust me).

Push one of the orange strips or a red square button on the inside of the bus to signal that you'd like the bus to stop.
