New York City Museums: Secrets to Free and Discounted Entrance Fees

New York City is home to an enormous collection of museums. New York City Museums are found large and small, modern and traditional, featuring art and music, fire and police!! Unlike Washington DC, where most museums are free, some New York City museums charge a lot! But, the good news is that you don’t have to spend a lot. I’ve done the important homework for you!!Plan your visits according to my guide below. I give you the inside tips on free days/times to visit, discounts, pay-what-you wish, and saving by becoming a member at all New York City Museums. There is absolutely no reason to pay full price.
American Craft Museum
40 W. 53 Street
Discounts/Freebies:
- Pay what you wish on Thursdays, from 6 PM – 8 PM.
- Students and seniors enjoy a discount of $4.00.
- Children under 12 are free.
American Folk Art Museum
45 W. 53rd Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues
Discounts/Freebies:
- Admission is free on Fridays after 5:30 PM.
- Students and seniors enjoy a $2 discount.
- Children under 12 are always free!
- Check the High 5 Tix Website. They almost always have $5 tickets for students and a $5 ticket for an accompanying friend or adult.

American Museum of Natural History
Central Park West at 79th Street
Discounts/Freebies:
- Most people don't realize that the admission price is actually a 'suggested' price. Translation: pay what you wish!!! However, if you, your wife/husband, or your family plan to attend many of special exhibits, it pays to become a member. Many of the special exhibits cost about $20 a person for admission. If you become an individual member for just $70, a dual member for just $90, or a family member for $115, your admission includes unlimited admission to the special exhibitions plus all sorts of extras. You will save a lot of money by becoming a member. In addition, most of the fee is tax deductible.

- Children under 12 years are free when accompanied by an adult.

- Students get a $10 discount.
- All New York City public school students, along with students from Bard Graduate Center, Barnard College, Columbia University, and the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, may visit the museum for free.

TIP: Take advantage of all the free daily museum tours led by art historians! Most of the tours last an hour and will enhance your enjoyment and understanding of art and any special exhibit. I just took the introductory museum tour and found it to be fascinating. After the historian explained each piece, I came away with a much greater understanding and appreciation of what we viewed together.
